1968 Mercedes 300SEL

Low mileage survivor

Limited production model

VIN: 12002097

Price: $27,500

Here for sale is this spectacular Mercedes 300SEL. Of all the M109 cars, this version with the M189 motor is the rarest, with only 2,365 produced from 1965 through 1967. The car was built in July of 1967 and delivered to its first owner in September of that year. It is titled as a 1968. The car is remarkably original, a standout example of one of Mercedes' most limited models.

The car has had one carefully applied repaint in its original color of DB158, White-Gray. All of the trim was removed, you'll find no areas with overspray or tape lines, it was a very high quality job. The paint finish is fantastic, showing excellent gloss and depth. Tires are matching Michelin X radials, they are older tires but show good tread and no sidewall checking. All 4 wheelcovers are in good original condition.

Panel fit throughout the car is perfect. Both bumpers are in terrific condition, still with good lustre and no damage or hazing.

Taillight lenses are in excellent condition. All of the car's brightwork is exceptional with no pitting anywhere. The beltline trim shows a couple of dings above the left taillight, otherwise they're straight and true throughout the car.

Headlamp assemblies are both mint. There's a small ding on the hood, shown in the 2nd photo below.

The only other real flaw on the car is a light scrape shown in the 1st photo below. Otherwise, this car can hold up to close scrutiny, it's the type of car where the more you look the more you like.

All of the car's glass is original, all of it is in great shape with no damage or hard water spotting. The windshield carries the original "Kinonglas-Kristall" marking that assures originality, the remainder are Sekurit branded originals in super condition. All of the anodized trim surrounding the windows is in excellent shape as well.

Solid trunk area with original jacking equipment and tool kit.

The car comes with an assortment of service records and factory literature. The stamps in the service booklet confirm the car's low mileage.

The interior is outstanding and totally original. The leather seats reflect a beautiful patina that speaks to the quality of materials used.

All of the switchgear operates correctly. Heater, fan, lights signals, horn, wipers, etc - all working. The Becker radio has good sound and the power antenna operates in tandem with the radio switch. The dealer installed A/C is not operational and I haven't diagnosed why.

The Coco mats were likely installed when new because the carpet underneath is amazingly well preserved. No wear, no stains, it's excellent from front to back. The dash shows no cracks or splits.

Great back seat area and parcel shelf, in line with the rest of the car.

All 4 door panels are in terrific condition, power windows all work, as well as the vacuum locks. All of the car's weatherstripping is original and still doing its job.

Good sills with no rust issues. The car's windlacing all looks like new.

The Macassar Ebony wood in the car is original and holding up beautifully. The wood trim on the A-pillars is an unusual detail that was phased out on later cars. The headliner is absolutely mint, probably one of the best originals I've ever seen.

The 3.0 litre M189 motor is in excellent operating condition, it runs strongly and smoothly with no smoke. The driving experience in the car is superb, with an excellent suspension and crisp handling. The car runs down the road with decorum - no issues, no drama.

Core support shows the original data tags.

The air suspension works correctly, it was recently serviced and two new bags were installed in the rear.

The undercarriage is solid and original, showing no signs of accident damage.

The fronts of the rockers show the typical staining but the view from underneath confirms no serious issues.
